Author's Purpose
what the author tries to do by writing a particular work
Setting
the time and location the story takes place
Text Structure
the particular order or pattern a writer uses to present ideas
Protagonist
the person, animal, or creature in a work of fiction that is known as the main character or "good guy"
Antagonist
the person, animal, creature, or force that opposes the main character
First Person POV
the narrator is a charcter in the story and refers to himself or herself with the pronoun "I"
Limited Third Person POV
the narrator shares the inner thoughts or feelings of one character and everything is viewed from this character's perspective
Third Person Omniscient POV
Narrator who knows and understands what each character thinks and feels
Exposition
the beginning of the story where the characters and setting are revealed
Rising Action
the part of the story that gets the reader interested in the story. This is where the conflict is introduced
Climax
the highest point of interest and the turning point of a story
Resolution
the final outcome or untangling of events in a story
External Conflict
a struggle with an outside force
Internal Conflict
a struggle within one's self
Main Idea
important information that tells more about the overall idea of a paragraph or a section of the text
Summarize
a brief statement that presents the main points in concise form
Metaphor
a figure of speech that a comparison is made between two unlike things
Ex: Her hair was silk
Simile
comparing two unlike things using the words "like" or "as"
Ex: His feet were as big as trash can lids.
Personification
giving human characteristics to an animal or an object
Ex: The door jumped out of the way.
Hyperbole
an exaggeration that is so dramatic no one would believe that it is true.
Ex: His beard was long as the Ohio River.
Alliteration
the repetition of a consonant sound or group of sounds in a series of words
Ex: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
Onomatopoia
the use of a word to describe or imitate a natural sound of the sound made by an object or action
Ex: Sizzle
Idiom
an expression that means something other than the literal meanings of its individual words
Ex: My dad "flipped out" when I told him I wanted to become a biker.
Synonyms
one of two or more words that have a similar meaning
Antonyms
a word opposite in meaning to another word
Context Clues
information a reader may obtain from a text that hels confirm the meaning of a word or group of words
Symbol
a concrete thing used to suggest something larger and more abstract
Theme
the author's underlying main idea, purpose, or feeling they are trying to convey
Genre
a kind, category, or sort of literary work
Plot
sequencing of events in a story generally built around conflict
Flat Character
a character who is not developed-not believeable
Round Character
a fully developed character with many traits-both good and bad
Static Character
a character who experiences no change throughout the story
Dynamic Character
a character who experiences change throughout the story

Informational text
non-fiction text used to inform the reader about a topic
Biography
a non-fiction book written about another person's life
Autobiography
a non-fiction book written about a person's life by that person
Historical Fiction
A fiction book set in the past usually containing actual figures from the past, but utilizes a fictional plot.
Science Fiction
A fiction book that involves the use of science or technology. Usually set in the future with events that could possibly happen in the future.
Fantasy
A fiction book that usually takes places in a magical world that involves elements of fantasy.
Fable
A short tale used to teach a moral lesson. Usually has talking animals.
Connotation
a suggested meaning of a word other than its explicit definition
Denotation
a direct specific meaning of a word
