slope (of a line)
refers to how steep the line is, and which directions it points.
Slope is usually written as a fraction. The numerator is called the rise. The denominator is called the run.
Slope is represented by the variable m
When you know two points on a line, you can find the slope:
By graphing the line and counting or
By using the slope formula:
the point where the line crosses the y axis
y = mx + b
is called slope-intercept form
If the equation is not in slope-intercept form, isolate y to determine slope and intercept.
The intercept method (of graphing)
of graphing uses two points, where x = 0 and y = 0
have the same slope, different intercepts. These lines never cross.
system of equations
two or more equations with the same variables. The solutions make true statements for all equations.
solve by graphing
the solution (x, y) is where the two lines intersect. Check using substitution for every variable and every equation.
special consideration for inequalities
have opposite, reciprocal slopes. These lines cross at a 90° angle.
