The Period Test
1. Remove the coordinating conjunction from the sentence by covering it up with your finger.
2. Replace it with a period.
3. If the words on BOTH sides of the period are complete sentences, then you have a compound sentence.
4. If you have a compound sentence, leave the conjunction in place and add a comma before it.
