Basic Breathing Technique
When breathing in yoga, it is important to breathe all the way into the lungs. Imagine breathing into the belly first, then expanding into the ribs, and finally feel the collarbones rise. Reverse this during exhale. This is a full breath. A good start is to practice a three-count breath, breathing in for three counts and breathing out for three counts. This helps establish a deeper, even breath.
Ujjayi Pranayama
This is the breath of sound, the victorious breath. In this breath the yogi puffs out the chest like that of a proud warrior. This breath is the main breathing technique during a practice. There is a subtle "ssss" sound on the inhale and a "hhhh" sound on the exhale. This breath is done at the back of the throat and starts to sound like Darth Vader.
Alternate Nostril Breathing
Using the thumb and the middle finger, one slightly covers each nostril. During this breath, one inhales through the right nostril while covering the left, then exhales through the left nostril while covering the right. From here, inhale through the left while covering the right and exhaling through the right covering the left. The breath continues alternating through the nostrils. This breath is good for clearing out the sinus cavities.
