How do you solve an equation for the unknown
keeping the equation balanced by doing the same operation of numbers on both sides to isolate variables on one side
when adding or subtracting from one side cancel it out on that side then move the number to the other side of the equation and change its sign. multiplying or dividing by the same number on both sides works the same way
Solve y - 4 = 20
y - 4 = 20 (add 20 to both sides of the equation)
y -4+4 = 20+4
y = 24
Solve 3x = 18
3x = 18 (divide both sides by 3 to isolate the variable x)
3x/3 = 18/3
x = 6
Solve x/3 = 12
x/3 = 12 (multiply 3 to both sides)
x = 36
Solve 16 + z = 24
16 + z = 24 (subtract 16 from both sides)
z = 8
Solve x/5 - 4 = 2
x/5 - 4 = 2 (add 4 to both sides)
