Terms in this set (41)
Dilation
A dilation is a transformation (notation ) that produces an image that is the same shape as the original, but is a different size.
Scale Factor
The ratio of any two corresponding lengths in two similar geometric figures
Proportional
When two quantities always have the same size in relation to each other. In other words they have the same ratio.
Similar Symbol
|| parallel lines
≅ congruent to equivalence of geometric shapes and size
~ similarity same shapes, not same size
Δ triangle shape
Parallel Lines
Two lines on a plane that never meet. They are always the same distance apart.
Function
is a special relationship where each input has a single output.
Diagonals
A straight line inside a shape that goes from one corner to another (but not an edge).
Partitions
A division into parts; Separation.
Perpendicular
A line meeting another at a right angle, or 90°
Reflection
Flip. A transformation in which a geometric figure is reflected across a line, creating a mirror image.
Translation
A translation (notation ) is a transformation of the plane that slides every point of a figure the same distance in the same direction.
Similar Triangles
Two triangles are similar if and only if the corresponding sides are in proportion and the corresponding angles are congruent.
Rectangle
is any quadrilateral with four right angles. It can also be defined as an equiangular quadrilateral
Quadrilateral
is a polygon with four edges (or sides) and four vertices or corners.
Midpoint
is a point on a line segment that divides the segment into two congruent segments.
Hypotenuse
is the longest side of a right-angled triangle, the side opposite of the right angle
Adjacent
two angles that have a common vertex and a common side.
Square
is a regular quadrilateral, which means that it has four equal sides and four equal angles
Parallelogram
is a (non self-intersecting) quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides.
Clockwise
Moving in the direction of the hands on a clock.
Isosceles
is a triangle that has two sides of equal length.
Quadrant
Any of the 4 areas made when we divide up a plane by an x and y axis (as shown).
They are usually numbered I, II, III and IV
Similar
having the same shape; having corresponding sides proportional and corresponding angles equal
Congruent Symbol
congruent to
equivalence of geometric shapes and size
Line Segment
is a part of a line that is bounded by two distinct end points
Skew Lines
are two lines that do not intersect and are not parallel
Symmetric
that one shape becomes exactly like another when you move it in some way: turn, flip or slide.
Distance
is the space between two objects or points.
Ratio
A ratio shows the relative sizes of two or more values.
Example: if there is 1 boy and 3 girls you could write the ratio as:
1:3 (for every one boy there are 3 girls)
1/4 are boys and 3/4 are girls
0.25 are boys (by dividing 1 by 4)
25% are boys (0.25 as a percentage)
Equilateral
is a triangle in which all three sides are equal.
Rotation
A transformation in which a plane figure turns around a fixed center point.
Corresponding Sides
are sides that are in the same position in different plane figures
Trapezoid
a convex quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides
Pentagon
A 5-sided polygon (a flat shape with straight sides)
Right Triangle
A triangle that has a right angle (90°)
Leg
In a right triangle, a leg is either of the two sides that form the right angle.
Collinear
When three or more points lie on a straight line.
Transformation
is a general term for four specific ways to manipulate the shape of a point, a line, or shape
Coincides
Two lines or shapes that lie exactly on top of each other.
Counterclockwise
moving the opposite direction of the hands of a clock
Absolute Value
How far a number is from zero.
