Atom
The smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element. Every piece of matter on Earth is composed of many of one type or another.
Nucleus
The center of the atom, where protons and neutrons are found. Nearly all of the mass in an atom is found here.
Proton
Positively charged particles in an atom. Always found in the nucleus of an atom.
Electrons
The negatively charged particles in an atom that surround the nucleus in a "cloud". They have a very small mass, and contribute almost no weight to the atom.
Electricity
Happens when electrons travel from one place to another.
Current
A steady flow of electricity.
Circuit
A path that an electric current can flow along.
Load
An object in a circuit that requires electricity. Electrons flow through the device, giving it power. Example: a light bulb
Conductor
Any material that allows electrons to move through it easily. Example: different kinds of metals.
Insulator
Materials that electrons have a hard time flowing through. Example: rubber and plastic.
Closed Circuit
A circuit that is a complete, unbroken loop, that a current can flow through. Has the power to give electricity to a load.
Open Circuit
A circuit that is a broken loop. The current cannot flow through the broken loop and therefore an this type of circuit is unable to give power to a load.
