She tells Elie to hold his anger in for not because his time will come. By doing this, she shows Elie who she really is (a Jew) and that she is hope that they will make it through.
Why does Idek beat Elie's father?
Idek beats Elie's father because he is older and slower and gets in his way. Idek often beats the prisoners for no reason, just to keep them afraid.
Why is Elie angry at his father for getting beaten?
Elie is angry at his father for the beating instead of Idek because he feels that his father could have tried harder to stay out of Idek's way.
Why does Elie give his father "marching lessons"?
Elie gives his father marching lessons because Franek uses his father's bad marching skills as a reason to justify his beatings. This is main reason for the blackmail of the gold crown.
Why does Elie laugh at Idek, and what is the result?
Elie laughs at Idek because he realizes that Idek forces all of his prisoners to work on Sunday in order to go to the factory to have his way with some poor Polish girl. As a result, Idek beats Elie with a whip 25 times in front of everyone as an example.

How does the death of that one man affect Elie, and how does he react when the air raid is over?
No one dares go for the cauldrons of soup, except the one lone prisoner who is killed. Many including Elie think the lone prisoner is brave but foolish to think that the Germans would allow him to have the soup. Once the air raid was over, Elie and his father are reunited and are more hopeful about liberation.

Why does Elie find the soup "excellent" after one execution, but tasting of "corpses" after another?
soup tasted "excellent" during some hangings because death was a constant part of the routine in the camps, so it didn't bother them to see some of the hangings. However, when the "pipel" was hanged, Elie said the soup tasted of "corpses." It bothered him how much the pipel suffered as he was dying.
