Science Chapter 17
Terms in this set (35)
Abbreviaton in scientific shorthand- first letter or two of an elements name (not always in English) First letter is usually Capital and the second if present is lowercase 1 or 2 letters only.
Smallest piece of matter that still has the properties of the element.
Even smaller particles- subsatomic particles that make up protons and neutrons
5th century BCE scientist. Discontinuous nature of matter. Atomos- indivisible. Model: Solid Sphere. Aristotle opposed this model and the continuous nature of matter.
Early 1800's. A new system of Chemical philosophy. Includes:
1. All matter is composed of tiny invisible particles.
2. All atoms of an element are identical (masses and properties)
3. Atoms of different elements are different.
4. Atoms of different elements combine in definite proportions to make new compounds.
5. Atoms of different elements can combine in multiple definite proportions.
1897 expert model proposed in 1904 and won the nobel prize in 1906. Used device made by William Crook called Crooke's tube. We sometimes call it a cathode-ray tube. *DISCOVERY OF THE ELECTRON.
Model: Plum-pudding- electrons evenly spread throughout solid + sphere.
1909 experiment with H. Giese + E. Marsden. 1911 model. Alpha- Scattering experiment- "Gold foil experiment"
1. Most alpha went straight through the gold foil.
2. Few deflected at angles and very few bounced back
1. Atom is mostly empty space.
2. Small, dense, positive core called a nucleus.
MODEL: Solar system model; Orbital model.
Under what scientist was the Gold foil Experiment discovered?
Modern Atomic theory
1913 model by N. Bohr. Aka - quantum model/ Bohr model. Electrons traveling in fixed orbits of certain energy around an atom's nucleus. Current Model:
Electron Cloud model; *Probability cloud model. Electrons do not follow fixed orbits but rather occupy areas around the nucleus where there is a high probability of finding an electron there
Composed mostly of protons and neutrons in a nucleus. *Since electrons are so small, they are negligible.
Atomic Mass Unit
unit of measurment for atomic particles. Which is 1/12 the mass of a carbon atom with 6 protons and neutrons.
Atomic Number (z)
The number of protons in an atom; identifies the element. goes on the Bottom left
The (Z) letter stand s for?
Mass Number (A)
the sum of the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. (top Left)
The (A) letter stands for?
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
Different isotopes have?
Mass Number =P+ (Atomic Number)
The name of an element followed by mass of an element's?
Average Atomic Mass
Is the weighted average mass of an element's isotopes.
-------------- is closest to its most abundant isotopes
Average Atomic Mass
Charged atoms that have lost or gained electrons.
become more + called: Cation
Become more - called: Anion
Some atoms are unstable with equal-------------?
Protons and Electrons (Neutral)
Atoms lose or gain to become?
Group 18- Noble Gases
the elements with a naturally stable electron arrangement.
Full valence shell
Generally Metals lose
the central part of an atom made up of Protons and Neutrons
Particle found in the nucleus which has no electrical charge, and a mass about the same size as a proton.
Particle in the nucleus, which has a positive electrical Charge.
Particle that orbits the nucleus of an atom and has a negative Electral Charge. They move more rapidly around the outer areas of the atom. Their arrangement determines the chemical properties of an atom. So small that the mass is negligible.
