IB Physics HL Topic 11: Electromagnetic Induction
Terms in this set (16)
The EMF induced when a conductor moves through a magnetic field. Depends on speed of wire, strength of magnetic field, and length of wire.
Magnetic Flux when magnetic field is perpendicular to surface
ΔΦ = BΔA = ΔΦ / ΔA
The direction of the induced emf is such that if an induced current were able to flow, it would oppose the change which caused it
The total amount of flux passing through all turns in a coil. Flux Linkage = NΦ (where Φ is amount of flux in 1 turn)
The magnitude of an induced emf is proportional to the rate of change of flux linkage. e = N(ΔΦ/Δt)
Alternating Current Generator Mechanism
Coil of wire rotates in the magnetic field due to an external force, the flux linkage of the coil changes with time and induces an emf causing current to flow.
Root Mean Square Current
The most effective current through the resistor when an ac generator is connected to a resistor
Eddy Current (transformers)
Unwanted currents induced in the iron core
A two-terminal electrical device that has negligible resistance in one direction and infinite resistance in the other.
Device that limits pulsating
A device that stores charge. Charge stored is proportional to the pd across the capacitor and the constant of proportionality is capacitance. C = q/V
Unit that measures capacitance. 1 F = 1 CV^-1
Capacitors in series
1/C(total) = 1/C + 1/C + 1/C
Capacitors in parallel
C(total) = C + C + C
Exponential decrease in charge stored in capacitor
q = q0e^-(t/RC)
product of RC, given by τ
