Nick on Gatsby
there was something gorgeous about him, some
heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away.
Gatsby's Mansion
it was a factual imitation of some Hôtel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool and more than forty acres of lawn and garden.
Nick Daisy and Tom
Daisy was my second cousin once removed and I'd known Tom in college.
Theme: Deception
"Tom's got some woman in New York."
Nick on Tom
one of those men who reach such an acute
limited excellence at twenty-one that everything afterward savors of anti-climax.
Tom Buchanan
His speaking voice, a gruff husky tenor, added to the impression of fractiousness he conveyed. There was a touch of paternal contempt in it, even toward people he liked--and there were men at New Haven who had hated his guts.
Nick on Jordan
I enjoyed looking at her
Buchanan Marriage
''I hate that word hulking," objected Tom crossly, "even in kidding."
"Hulking," insisted Daisy
Theme: Order
"Civilization's going to pieces," broke out Tom violently
Nick sees Gatsby
I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward--and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.
Theme: Frailty Of Women
i'm glad it's a girl. And i hope she'll be a fool- that's the bets thing a girl can be in this world , a beautiful little fool
Colour Green (CM)
Gatsby gazes at 'a single green light, minute and faraway' The green light symbolizes a dream or hope for Gatsby. (His dream of being with Daisy). The colour green could also represent money perhaps foreshadowing the means in which Gatsby achieves his dream.
The Theme of Deceit (NJ)
The first glimpse of a very prominent theme of deceit that is seen in the novel can be seen in chapter 1, when Daisy lies to Tom about what she and Nick were talking about. "I cant seem to remember, but I think we talked about the Nordic race. Yes, I'm sure we did."
Nick's Neutrality (HS)
I'm inclined to reserve all judgements.
Daisy's Impact on people (CC)
Nick describes Daisy, "looking up into my face, promising that there was no one in the world she so much wanted to see." Shows how she influences people.
Tom is very powerful in various ways
"Her husband, among various physical accomplishments had been one of the most powerful ends"/"His family were enormously wealthy"
