A conflict instigated ;by two opposing powers who do not directley fight against each other but instead us third parties to do the fighting for them.

Domino Theory
A theory from the 1950's to 1980's, that stated that if one country in a region came under the influence of communism, then the surrounding countries would follow in a row like a set of dominoes.
