MSM: Sensory Register - Coding
Found SR only retains information in the iconic store for a few milliseconds, but 2/3 seconds in the echoic store.
MSM: Sensory Register - Capacity
Flashed 3x4 grid of letters for 1/20th of a second and then asked ps to recall one row. As information would fade very quickly, he sounded different tones to indicate which row had to be recalled. Ps were able to recall the letters therefore the information was there indicating that the SR's capacity is quite large.
Walsh & Thompson
MSM: Sensory Register - Duration
Found that the iconic sensory store has a duration of 500 milliseconds.
MSM: STM - Coding
Acoustically similar words (e.g. cat, mat, sat) were recalled the least effectively, there is acoustic confusion. This suggests that the STM is coded in a acoustic basis.
MSM: STM - Capacity
Capacity of STM is between 5 to 9 items, but that the 'chunk' was a basic unit of STM. This means five to nine chunks can be held at any one time, increasing the store's capacity.
Peterson & Peterson
MSM: STM - Duration
Read nonsense trigrams to ps. 90% of trigrams were recalled correctly after 3 seconds but only 5% were recalled after 18 seconds. This suggests the STMs duration is between 20-30
MSM: LTM - Coding
Semantically similar words (e.g. big, tall, huge) were recalled the least effectively, there is semantic confusion. This suggests that the LTM is coded in a semantic basis.
