Negative number
a number less than zero

Absolute value
is the distance of a number from zero i.e. the number without a + or - sign.
To find the negative of a number
change the sign from negative to positive or positive to negative

Rational number
can be expressed as a simple fraction
Simple fraction
a fraction where the numerator and denominator are integers
Examples of rational numbers are
integers, simple fractions, terminating decimals and recurring decimals
Irrational number
cannot be expressed as a fraction where the numerator and denominator are integers
When written as a decimal, an irrational number
goes on infinitely with no recurring pattern
Examples of irrational numbers are
π (pi, 3.1428...), √7, 1⁄√2
To denote both positive and negative roots
use the ± (plus-minus) sign
