The people who arrest others for committing thought crimes, any thoughts against Big Brother.

Winston has a feeling that O'Brien feels the same way he does, but he's afraid to speak with him.
Who is Emmanuel Goldstein?
He was once on the same level as Big Brother, but he was a traitor. They condemned him to death, and he escaped.
What is Two Minutes of Hate?
A picture of Emmanuel Goldstein is flashed on a telescreen and everyone has to "BOO!"
What is The Book?
It was supposedly written by Goldstein and it contains all the information to over throw Big Brother and all the information against him.
What does Winston write on half a page of his diary?
"Down with Big Brother!"
What does it mean to be vaporized?
Any evidence of your existence is destroyed and striped from society. If anyone as much as mentions your name, they were vaporized too.
What happens when someone knocks at Winston's door?
He thinks that someone is after him.
Who was it knocking at the door?
It was Mrs. Parsons knocking at the door because she wanted him to fix her kitchen sink.
Who is Mr. Parsons?
He is Winston's neighbor and co-worker. Winston thinks that he is a fat, stupid man who is a big supporter of Big Brother.
What happens once a month?
There's a hanging of people who are said to be traitors in the park. People are encouraged to bring their children.
What are the children trained to do?
Report their parents to the Thought Police if they believe they've committed a thought crime.
What does Winston dream that O'Brien says to him?
"We shall meet in a place where there is no darkness."
What does Winston put on top of his diary?
A speck of dust on the corner of his diary so that he could tell if someone moved it.
What happened to Winston's mother?
He recalls vague memories of her but he believes that she was vaporized.
What does Winston remember about Oceania?
Oceania hasn't always been at war with Eurasia but the government says otherwise.

"Who controls the past, controls the future; who controls the present controls the past"

Believing two opposite things at the same time.

Primarily in the Ministry of Truth.
What is a memory hole?
A slot where the original documents go. They get sucked up and burned by a furnace.
What is a pneumatic tube?
The tube that sucks up the new and revised versions of the originals.
What is a speakwrite?
The device Winston would dictate into to make the changes that were to be made to the document.
What is a unperson?
Simply someone who has been vaporized.
Who did Winston make up?
Why did Winston enjoy his job?
Because he could escape his horrible life by making up stories.
What was the purpose of creating new words, or newspeak?
To eliminate words, so then you eliminate thoughts, and then you're more accepting f stuff put in your mind.
Why does Winston believe that Syme will be vaporized?
Because he is too intelligent.
What does Winston wonder?
If he is the only one who remembers how life used to be and how much the party lies to them.
What does Winston think about the girl with the dark hair?
He thinks that she is a spy and that she is following him.
What else does Winston write in his diary?
About the time he saw a prostitute.
Why does the Party want to get rid of sex?
Because they fear people will fall in love with each other which means they'll be loyal to each other rather than Big Brother. According to the Party, the only reason reason to have sex is to have kids to serve Big Brother.
Who is Winston's wife?
Her name is Katherine and hasn't seen her in ten years. They agreed to separate because no child was produced.
What did Winston think would make him feel better?
He thought if he wrote down his experience, he would feel better about it, but he didn't. He thought that he was being rebellious by seeing the prostitute because you aren't supposed to desire sex.
How does Winston feel about the Proles?
He believes that the only hope lies in them because they make up 85% of the population. He says that they'll never rebel until they become conscious.
How does the Party feel about the Proles?
The Party believes that the proles are like animals so they let them do what they want because they think they're ignorant.
What did Winston hold in his hand?
He held in his hand evidence that the party lied, but he threw it down the memory hole.
What is the next thing he writes in his diary?
He writes "I understand HOW, I dint understand WHY"
What does Winston do while walking around the proles district?
He sees an old man and follows him into a pub to ask him about life before the revolution.
What happens after Winston talks to the old man?
He gets no good information from the old man because all he could remember were little details of his life. Winston then goes back to the shop where he bought the diary.
What did Winston find out about the junk shop?
The junk shop is an antique shop and it interests Winston because he wants to know more about the past. He purchases a 100 year old paperweight.
Where does the old man that owns the shop take Winston?
He takes Winston upstairs and shows him an apartment with no telescreen. Winston thinks he should rent it out.
What is the name of the old man that owns the shop?
