significance test
is a formal procedure for comparing observed data with a claim (also called a hypothesis) whose truth we want to access
null hypothesis (H0)
the claim that we are trying to find evidence against
alternative hypothesis Ha
the claim that we are trying to find evidence for
one-sided alternative hypothesis
states that a parameter is larger than the null hypothesis value or that the parameter is smaller than the null value
two-sided alternative hypothesis
states that the parameter is different from the null hypothesis value (larger or smaller).
P-value
the probability, computed assuming H0 is true, that the statistic would take a value as extreme as or more extreme than the one actually observed
statistically significant
the P-value is smaller than alpha
Type I error
reject H0 when H0 is true
Type II error
fail to reject H0 when H0 is false
Power
the probability that the test will reject H0 at a chosen significance level α, when the specified alternative value of the parameter is true
test statistic
measures how far a sample statistic diverges from what we would expect if the null hypothesis H0 were true, in standardized units (statistic-parameter)/(standard deviation of statistic)
one-sample t statistic
t= (x ̅ - μ_0)/(s_x⁄√n)
