how do we learn gender roles?
-taught to us by family/peers
-family is the first significant, we learn first from them

-symbolic interactionalist point out society uses symbols to gender us (ex: girls bathroom logo wearing skirt)
-symbols guide attitudes/behavior
-symbolic interactionalist interested in everyday interaction and how these symbols effect behavior/lang
(Ex: the way women/men sit, the typical male/female sports/ men with baby/ women with baby)
structural functionalism (Theory of complementary roles)
-gender in harmonizing roles
-how roles link men/women together while building familys & intergrating society as a whole
-how gender works together to make society run smoothly
society/parent roles in raising male/female
-MALES are socialized using INSTRUMENTAL ORIENTATION(rational, competetive, goal oreiented)
-FEMALE are socialized using EXPRESSIVE ORIENTATION(emotional, responsive, cooperative, nurturing)
-teaching children these roles so they are being socialized as they come into adulthood
