Stein of Antwerp
A relative who meets Elie and his father at Auschwitz. He is worried about his wife Reizel and his sons. Elie cheers him up by telling him the lie that his mother has been receiving letters from his wife, though it is not true. He eventually learns the truth that his family is dead and dies.
Moshe the Beadle
Eliezer's teacher of Jewish mysticism, Moshe is a poor Jew who lives in Sighet. He is deported before the rest of the Sighet Jews but escapes and returns to warn the town what the Nazis are doing to the Jews. Tragically, the community takes Moshe for a lunatic. They do not listen to his warnings.
A Jewish woman from Sighet who is deported in the same cattle car as Eliezer. She is taken for a madwoman when, every night, she screams that she sees furnaces in the distance. She proves to be a prophetess, however, as the trains soon arrive at the crematoria of Auschwitz.
