Terms in this set (8)
What is deforestation?
The removal of trees for timbers and farms
Reasons why people cut down trees
1. Clear space for farming
2. Wood for timber
3. Clear land for mining
What is leaching?
Removal of minerals from the soils (NO3/PO4^3-)
How does deforestation increase the rate of leaching?
Vegetation provides cover over the soil, so deforestation causes the land lose protection of cover therefore increases surface runoff
How trees reduce soil erosion?
Roots of the trees holds the soil
What does soil erosion cause?
It is washed down to the streams and accumulate as silt and can clog rivers
How could deforestation harm people living in the area?
