General Chemistry: Periodic Table of Elements
Terms in this set (7)
Types of Elements
Elements are categorized into groups based on their chemical and physical properties
The columns represent different groups of elements, in which the elements have similar physical or chemical characteristics of the outermost electron shells of their atoms (i.e., the same core charge), as most chemical properties are dominated by the orbital location of the outermost electron.
The rows represents the period of the Table, in which the atomic numbers increase from left to right. The periods are numbered 1 through 7 on the left-hand side of the table. Elements that are in the same period have chemical properties that are not all that similar.
