science
The knowledge gained from careful, systematic investigation of the natural world.
observation
A piece of information that a person has gained by using one or more of the five senses-- sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste
inference
A logical conclusion made from observations.
bias
What someone wants to believe that affects his/her conclusions.
presupposition
What you believe; An idea that you take for granted but that affects your worldview.
worldview
The waymwe see and interpret the world and data; it is based on beliefs and presuppositions.
naturalism
The belief that only nature is real and no
God is involved; nature is the ultimate reality and all we see in the world must result from natural causes.
in God's image
This means that God made humans to reflect certain aspects of His own being, such as intelligence, emotions, and will (Imago Dei).
Creation Mandate
The calling that humans are to take care of the earth and use it wisely.
scientific method/process
An organized way of finding a workable solution to a problem.
hypothesis
A simple testable statement ("educated guess") about the answer to a problem.
data
Information collected from scientific observations.
survey
Data obtained by observing many conditions that already exist.
controlled experiment
Controlling the variables (things that can change) of two or more groups.
experimental/independent variable
The one factor that is changed from a control group.
experimental group
The group that experiences the experimental/independent variable.
control group
The group that does not receive the experimental/independent variable.
classifying
Arranging scientific data into similar groups to see patterns.
analyzing
Evaluating whether or not the data supports the hypothesis.
verifying
Obtaining more data through repeated experiments or surveys.
dependent variable
The variable we measure in a controlled experiment to see if it changed due to the independent variable.
