Can give lower concentration of oxygen like nasal cannula, but can be given to mouth breather (COPD pt, etc.)
Simple face mask
at least 5 liters, up to 15, so pt. doesnt retain CO2 - can be used without o2 for hyperventilating pt.
Partial rebreathing mask
can give a person 100% o2 at 15 liters - highest that can be given without an orders and invasive intervention
CPAP and BiPap
can be full facial mouth and nasal, nasal often seen outpatient in sleep apnea pt. full face used in ICU to put off intubation. most are considered bivalve. CPAP can increase work of breathing
if pt. has respiratory rate of less than 8 or has failed all other oxygen masks they can be "bagged"
oropharyngeal airway allows pt to be bagged at the same time. this can only be used on unconcious pts because it makes pt. gag
nasopharyngeal airway doesnt go down as far as OPA so can be used on conscious pt.
mode, set rate (8-12BPM), Tidal volume (Vt), oxygen concentration (FIO2), PEEP 5-10(positive end expiratory pressure) keeps alveoli open
