What is thermal expansion? When matter expands, and increases in volume, due to rise in temperature. What is thermal contraction? When matter contracts, and decreased in volume, due to drop or removal of temperature. What is the difference between heat and temperature?Heat is the energy transferred from one material or object to another as a result of a difference in temperature or change in state. Temperature is the average kinetic energy of its particles. What is melting?Melting is the change of state of a substance from a solid form to a liquid form. If enough energy is added to the liquid, it evaporates. What is evaporation?Evaporation is the change of state of a substance from liquid form to gas form. What is condensation?Condensation is the change of state of a substance from gas form to liquid form. If enough energy is removed from the liquid, it solidifies. What is solidification?Solidification is the change of state of of a substance from liquid form to solid form. What is sublimation?Sublimation is the change of state of a substance directly from a solid form to a gas form. What is depostion? The opposition of sublimation, it is the change of state from a gas to solid form. What is a fluid?Fluids are forms of matter that can flow. What is density?Denisty is a measure of the mass contained in a given volume. Substances with a lower density will float on substances with a higher density. Why does ice float on water? When water freezes, particles move slightly farther apart as they become fixed in position. This means that ice is actually less dense than liquid water, so it floats. How is a breeze created over land on a hot summer day? When air is heated near the ground, particles gain energy and move farther apart. The warm air has a lower density than the air on the air around it and, as a result, begins to rise. As warm air raises, cooler air rushes in beneath it, and a breeze is created. How can you find the volume of a rectangular solid?Volume of a sold is often measured in cubic centimeters. A cubic centimeter is the volume of a cube that measures 1cm on each side. In other words, the volume of an object equals the number of 1 cm cube it takes to fill that object. V=length x width x height. How do you find the volume of an irregularly shaped sold?Using the displacement method. Displacement is the amount of space tht an object takes up when placed in a fluid. How do you calculate density?density (D) = mass (m) / volume (V)What is the density of water?1.00g/mLWhat are the two ways to measure density?g/mL and g/cubic centimeter
