Lumbar Precautions
*Do not bend forward at the waist more than 90º or raise knees higher than hips.
*Do not lift more than 10 pounds
*Do not twist trunk while performing an activity.
*Do not cross knees or ankles while sitting, standing, or lying.
*Always log roll out of bed. Have a pillow between your knees for comfort and to help maintain precautions if necessary.
Cervical Precautions
*Avoid bending of the spine.
*Refrain from pushing, pulling, or
lifting greater than 10 pounds.
*Mobility is encouraged. Early
ambulation is vital.
*If a brace was prescribed, make
sure you wear it when not in bed.
*Do not cross legs.
Thoracic Precautions
*Do not bend or twist your back repeatedly.
*Do not lift more than 5-10 pounds (about the weight of a gallon of milk).
*If you go to pick something up and it causes strain to the back muscles, do
not lift it.
*Remember to keep things close to your body if you do lift or carry anything,
and use your knees instead of your back if you bend. This will decrease the
stress to your lower back.
*Do not do any running/jogging, vacuuming, laundry, riding a lawn mower,
wave runner or anything that might irritate your back until you have
completely healed from your surgery.
*Do not drive for at least two weeks after surgery. After the two weeks do not
drive if you are taking prescription pain medications or a muscle relaxer.
These medications can cause you to be drowsy. Once you are able to drive,
make sure that you can safely look over your shoulders without causing any
pain.
