a group that does not undergo change and is used compare against the experimented groups
sentence: The control group was the only group that we didn't put the special soil on.
independent variable
a variable whose variation does not depend on that of another.
sentence: In mathematical modeling, statistical modeling and experimental sciences, the values of dependent variables depend on the values of independent variables.
dependent variable
a variable that changes in response to the independent variable
sentence: A dependent variable is what you measure in the experiment and what is affected during the experiment.
an educated guess made at the beginning of the scientific process

controlled experiment
a test where the person conducting the test only changes one variable at a time in order
sentence: In a controlled experiment, an independent variable is the only factor that is allowed to be adjusted, with the dependent variable as the factor that the independent variable will affect.
controlled variables
quantities that a scientist wants to remain constant
sentence: Controlled variables are variables that an experimenter keeps constant to prevent confounding with the independent variable.
experimental group
the group in an experiment that receives the variable being tested
sentence: We tested the Miracle Grow on the experimental group of plants.
scientific inquiry/process/method
the series of steps one must complete to find an explanation of unknown variables in an experiment
sentence: I used the Scientific Method to figure out my scientific question.
qualitative observation
data that can be observed with our senses: sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing
Sentence: I made a qualitative observation that the jello was jiggly.
quantitative observation
made with numbers and are measurable
sentence: I made a ? that the mass of the jello was 1.13 g/cm3
the quality, condition, or fact of being exact and accurate
