The Druids are interested in divine matters,
sacrificia publica ac privata procurant, religiones interpretantur;
they look after public and private sacrifices, they explain religious beliefs;
ad hos magnus numerus adulescentium discendi causa concurrit,
A great number of young men gather together to them for the sake of learning,
magnoque hi sunt apud eos honore.
these (the Druids) are held in great honour among the young men.
nam fere de omnibus controversiis publicis privatisque constituunt
For they decide about almost all disputes, public and private,
si quod facinus admissum est, si caedes facta, si de hereditate, de finibus controversia est, Druides rem decernunt,
if any crime is committed, if a murder is carried out, if there is a dispute about inheritance and boundaries, the Druids settle the matter.
praemia poenasque constituunt.
They decide the rewards and punishments.
si quis aut privatus aut publicus eorum decreto non stetit, sacrificiis interdicunt;
If anyone either private or public has not stood by their decision, they ban him from sacrifices.
haec poena apud eos est gravissima
This punishment is very serious among them.
ei quibus ita interdictum est numero impiorum ac scelestorum habentur;
Those who have been banned in this way (From sacrifices) are considered in the number of impious and criminal people;
eis omnes decedunt, aditum sermonemque fugiunt, ne quid ex contagione incommondi accipiant;
everyone avoids them, everyone flees from their approach and conversation, so that they don't receive any harm from the contact
neque eis petentibus ius redditur neque honos ullus datur.
Neither when they are seeking for justice is any given to them, nor is any honour given to them.
his autem omnibus Druidibus praeest unus, qui summam inter eos habet auctoritatem.
