Thermal Energy
The total kinetic energy of all the particles in a substance

1.) How much of a substance/particles

Heat
The energy transferred between objects of different temperatures; energy transfers in one direction, hot to cold
Temperature
The measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in substance.
Temperature Scales
Celsius, Fahrenhiet, Kelvin
Conduction
The tranfer of energy from direct contact; from one form of matter to another when particles collide
Convection
The transfer of energy through a liquid or a gas
Convection Current
When particles in a hot liquid or gas speed up, spread out, becomes less dense and rises; then particles cool, slow down, becomes more dense, and sinks.
Radiation
The transfer of energy through electromagnetic waves through a space
Conductor
Material which transfers heat easily; metal
Insulator
Material which reduces or prevents the tranfer of heat; cloth, rubber, wood
Thermal Expansion
When particles in a substance heat up, speed up, spread out and expand
