Constructive discipline

Destructive discipline
-threats and fear to control behavior
-alert to impending penalty or termination

-unfair in application of rules or resulting punishment
Self-discipline

-subordinate knows rules and accepts rules as valid
-mutual trust
Progressive discipline steps (3)
1. informal reprimand/verbal admonishment, informal meeting, discuss deficiency, suggestions for improvement
2. formal reprimand/written admonishment, specific id violations, potential consequences, plan of action, EMPLOYEE SIGNATURE DOES NOT IMPLY AGREEMENT WITH ALLEGATIONS, EMPLOYEE ALLOWED TO RESPOND IN WRITING
3. suspension from work
4. involuntary termination/dismissal

-work meets only minimal standards
-tremendous effort to meet competencies but only meet minimal standards
-traditional discipline not constructive in modifying behavior
Manager's role in assisting the impaired employee
-Address immediately
-do not nurture. leads to enabling.
-DO NOT participate actively in recovery. Expert objective intervention is necessary!
- do not diagnose cause of addiction
-patient safety - 1st priority
