Quarter Note
A music note that is equal to one beat (1) of time. It is represented by a solid dot with a plain stem.
Eighth Note
A music note that is equal to one half (1/2) of a beat of time. It is represented by a solid dot with a hooked stem. They are usually grouped in sets of two.
Half Note
A music note that is equal to two (2) beats of time. It is represented by a hollow dot with a plain stem.
Whole Note
A music note that is equal to four beats (4) of time. It is represented by a hollow dot with NO stem.
Quarter Note Rest
A symbol that represents one quarter (1) note worth of SILENCE.
Ledger Lines
A short line added for notes above or below the range of a staff.
Time Signature
Two stacked numbers: The top number showing how many beats fit in each measure; the bottom number showing which note represents the beat.
The Measure
Music is organized into 'bars' using vertical lines. Each 'bar' holds the same total value of notes.
