Time series data

Sequential numerical data gathered over time, for example: Income each month, daily rainfall or a patient's temperature taken each 30 minutes.

Linear

In a straight line. A linear equation, when graphed, will be a straight line.

Variable

A letter or other symbol taking the place of a number. A variable does not necessarily represent just one specific number; it can represent many different values.

Bivariate data

Data that is collected in pairs.

Scatterplot

A graph using points to show the relationship between two sets of data or two variables.

Correlation

The relationship between two or more values or variables.

Outlier

In a set of data, any value that is much larger or much smaller than the rest of the data.

Trendline

A line on a graph showing the general direction that a group of points seem to be heading.

Y = mx + c

The equation of a straight line.

Interpolation

An estimation of a value inside the range of observed or recorded data.

Extrapolation

An estimation of a value outside the range of observed or recorded data.

Linear regression

A technique to model the relationship between two variables by fitting a straight line equation to observed data.

Least squares regression

A more accurate technique to find the line of best fit, however it is affected by outliers in the data set.

3 median regression

A technique to find the line of best fit, that is not affected by outliers in the data set.
