Strings
All strings produce their tone by the vibration of stretched strings.
Examples of string instruments
violin, viola, cello, harp, double bass
Woodwinds
The woodwinds produce tone by means of a vibrating column of air enclosed in a pipe or tube, and with the exception of the flute and piccolo, they produce the vibration by means of a single or double reed.
Examples of woodwinds instruments
Oboe, English horn, flute, Piccolo, Clarinet, Bass clarinet, Bassoon, Contra-bassoon
Brass
The brass section includes instruments in which the vibration is made by air blown through the player's lips which are pressed into a cup-shaped mouthpiece. You buzz your lips into a cup-shaped mouthpiece. Lowest.

French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba
Percussion
The percussion instruments provide the orchestra with accents, rhythms and special timbres. In most cases, a sound is produced by striking the instrument with another object; a stick, mallet or beater.
Examples of percussion instruments
Timpani, bass drum, snare drum, cymbals, triangle, tambourine
Violin
The soprano of the string choir; expressive range; melodic passages
Viola
The contralto of the string group; larger than violin; strong tone;
Cello
Held between knees; full tone & powerful; during the Baroque
The Double Bass
Lowest voice in the string family; so large must be held upright; six feet long
Harp
A part of the string family; no bow; plucked; 7 petals to change pitch of strings
