Scientific Revolution
A major shift in thinking between 1500 and 1700, in which modern science began as a new way of gaining knowledge about the natural world.
Rationalism
belief in reason and logic as the source of knowledge
Before the Scientific Revolution
Europeans got their ideas from the Bible and classical thinkers, like Aristotle.
After the Scientific Revolution
People got their ideas from reason, observation, and experimentation.
Geocentric Theory
The idea that the earth is at the center of the universe. (Earth-centered.)
Heliocentric Theory
The idea that the Earth goes around the sun. (Sun-centered.)
Copernicus
developed the heliocentric theory
Kepler
said the planets' orbits (paths around the sun) were oval, not round.
Galileo
used the telescope to prove Copernicus and the heliocentric theory were correct.
The Church's response
Since the Catholic Church said the Earth was at the center of the Universe, they put Galileo on trial as a heretic.
