To create a drawing or photo on frosted mylar or transparency, overlay it on a solar plate, and expose film and plate together to the sun or exposure unit. The ultraviolet light strikes the surface of the plate, the polymer hardens while the parts of the polymer blocked from the light by opaque lines and marks of the drawing remain soluble. By gently scrubbing the plate with water, the soluble residue washes away, leaving a plate with lines and grooves etched in polymer. Depending on the materials used to create a transparency, prints can resemble etchings, lithographs, screen prints, linocuts, or photographic effects. The printer can create an intaglio or a relief print.
