Perspective
Name for the technique by which artists create the illusion of depth on a two-dimensional surface; also, consider the many ways by which artists are able to achieve perspective in art
Gothic (medieval) architecture
Characterized by tall spires, large stained-glass windows, dark interiors, ornate exteriors, vertical lines, pointed arches, flying buttresses; overall purpose was to lift one's thoughts heavenward
Renaissance architecture
Characterized by domes, small round windows, horizontal lines (this world is important = secularism), rounded arches, vaults, and columns; inspired by Greco-Roman architecture; Renaissance architecture demonstrated that humans and their world were important
Types of sculpture
Relief vs Niche vs Freestanding
Medieval (Gothic) painting
Religious themes dominated; paintings were flat = very little depth or perspective; lack of realism in human subjects; the artist viewed as an artisan and not individually important; gold backgrounds; halos; use of tempera paints (binding agent is egg yolk), key patrons typically the RCC and the aristocracy
Renaissance painting
Known for its artistic realism (or naturalism); religious and secular themes and subject matter; use of oil paints (why?), portraiture (focus on the individual), key patrons include the RCC, aristocracy, and wealthy middle class merchants; focus on the human body (especially the nude in the Italian Renaissance) and non-human details (in the Northern Renaissance)
Fresco
Mural paintings on wet lime plaster; paint is typically water-based
Vitruvius
Roman architect and author of De Architecura (remember his book was "rediscovered" by Poggio Bracciolini in a monastic library in Switzerland in 1414 CE and read by the Italian Renaissance architect Brunelleschi)
Chiaroscuro
Italian for "light-dark"; when the artist uses strong contrasts between light and dark to give the composition a sense of depth

Durer, Melencolia I (copper engraving)
Holbein, Portrait of Sir Thomas More (oil)
Durer, Saint Jerome in his Study (copper engraving)
