Why did the Portuguese trade in West Africa
Powerful kingdom, large army used it to make war and capture people who were then sold to merchants and then to Europeans.

They received firearms, textiles, clothes,
manufactured goods, liquor, money, iron bars , and other luxury items. In return for what?
Attack or raid on an isolated village/ defeat of another group in battle to secure captives
Captives would be marched to the coast or to a market town in the interior where they would be either sold or held until they could be sold
When they reached the coast they would be inspected by European traders. If they passed the inspection they would be branded and placed in a dungeon or holding area. They would remain there until they were placed on ships bound for the New World.
