At the root of all literature lay four narrative categories:
The comic, the romantic, the tragic, and the ironic; These related to the four seasons
By Saussure; Focusing on a language at one particular time and emphasizing the whole state of a particular language at a particular time
-Focus is on how the language and its parts function
-Focus in not on tracing the historical development
-Focus is on how it operates instead of evolution
-Attention to the nature and composition of language and its constituent parts
Meaning is relational
Saussure had made the point that, for instance, "cat" is "cat" because it is not "cap" or "bat"
Sign (word) = Signifier (written or spoken mark)
Signified (a concept)
So the meaning/concept/signified might support/be the foundation of the signifier/word but that meaning is, in turn, only itself supported by/founded upon other signifier/words
