What is the Human Development Index?
The HDI measures the development of countries using four indicators in three areas. A score is given to three decimal places- from 0.000-1.000.
Which four indicators are used?
The three areas are Health, Wealth and Education. The four indicators are life expectancy, expected years of schooling, mean years of schooling and GNP per capita.
What is Sustainable Development?
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the people without wasting resources or destroying the environment. Re-planting a tree for each one cut down and using solar or wind energy are good examples.
What does it imply when a country is said to be Interdependent?
A country that is interdependent relies on other countries to buy its exports and sell them its imports. It works with other countries to trade supplies.
How interdependent is Japan?
Japan is very interdependent because it has very few natural resources. It needs to buy natural resources from other countries to live- like oil-, and to make manufactured goods to export.
List four of Brazil's natural resources.
Sugar, Lumber, Iron and Coffee (SLIC)
Give two indicators of development and their definitions.
Birth rate: the number of live babies for every 1000 people in the total population every year.
Death Rate: the number of people in every 1000 people who die each year.
Infant Mortality Rate: the number of children in every 1000 born alive who die before their first birthday.
GNP per capita: how much money every person in the country would get if the entire sum of its wealth were divided.
How do the poor live in Brazil?
In Favelas- self built houses, tap into electricity, unemployed or self-employed (the informal sector is 1/3 of the population). Children work.
Alternatively, how do the rich of Brazil live?
Ultramodern, gated apartment complexes with good security and many luxuries. Children go to school.
What physical/natural factors does Japan have to deal with that hinder development?
Natural disasters- earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions- and a very mountainous terrain (not much livable land).
