What is the gentry class?
Rich nor poor, small planters, independent farmers, allowed to vote, few held office.
What is the middle class?
People who signed a contract for their ocean voyage to America and worked off the money they owed.
What are indentured servants?
Not a large portion, allow to own property, couldn't vote or sit on juries, some bought enslaved family then released them.
What are the Free African Americans?
There was very little space and also many disease. Also there was no space to use the bathroom
Why was the Middle Passage brutal?
Because of plantations and profit from tobacco and rice
Why did slavery take hold so strongly in the colonies?

Because people are so spread out, there are few schools
Why do southern colonies not develop educationally like the New England?
An emotional Christian movement taking place in the colonies during the 1730s and 40s.
What was the Great Awakening?
Pushed the idea that if people could decide how to worship God, they could decide how to govern themselves.
How did the Great Awakening push democratic ideas that would inspire future colonists?
A worldwide movement where European thinkers came to believe that all problems could be solved by human reason.
What is the Enlightenment?
That people have natural rights given to them by God, and people create governments to protect those rights.

What was John Locke's three divine rights?
The government should split into 3 branches so one group doesn't gain too much power. A legislative branch to make laws, executive to enforce laws, and judicial to make judgements based on the law.
