Scientific Method
The process used by scientists to find answers to questions or solve a problem.
Problem
A clear statement of a situation that we are trying to investigate, understand or predict.
Hypothesis
A testable If, Then, Because prediction of what will occur in an experiment
Experiment
The process carried out in order to collect data and test a hypothesis.
Independent Variable
The part of the experiment that is being tested or the part that is changed by the person doing the experiment. Also called the manipulated variable.
Dependent Variable
This is the part of the experiment that is affected by the independent variable. Also called the response variable.
Experimental Control
The part of an experiment in which the manipulated variable is at its lowest level or is not modified. Also called the "Standard of Comparison"
Procedure
This describes the steps that are used during an experiment.
Observations
Using our five senses to gather data during an experiment. The data can be anything you see, hear, taste, touch or smell.
Data
The information collected during an experiment.
Graphs (and charts)
These are used to communicate the results of an experiment.
Analyze
To examine, methodically, looking for patterns and trends
Error
A mistake
Conclusion
A summary of whether the data supports or does not support (rejects) the hypothesis.
