Few showed up to meeting but once GW joined the cause, centralizers became more optimistic. and him going to the constitutional convention gave it credibility.

The argument between two groups. One that believed America required a strong national government, a nation-state with centralized authority, complex commercial economy, and proud standing of world affairs.

The other group envisioned a weaker central government and an american society that remained rural and agrarian, while the states and people beheld most of the power.

Alexander Hamilton exerted influence and domestic foreign policy

Alexander considered aristocratic in personal tastes and political philosophy.

He believed that a a stable and effective government required an enlightenment ruling class.

Federalists had more than vision for how to stabilize government. They envisioned a nation with wealthy, enlightened ruling class, a vigorous independent commercial economy and a thriving industrial sector, and a national able to play prominent role in economic affairs.

George Washington believed political parties were dangerous

Hamilton and his followers become an "interested and overbearing majority" according to Madison.

Federalists used their control over appointments and the awarding of government franchises to reward their supporters and win additional allies.
They encouraged formation of local associations, largely aristocratic in nature to strengthen their standing in local communities.

Opponents believed they were corrupt like British governments.

Republicans formed committees, societies, and caucuses. claimed they represented the true interests of the nation. Fighting to protect people from federalist "conspiracy."

Jefferson believed in an agrarian society but didn't scorn commercial activity or industry. He just feared that industry/commercial activity would lead to urban mobs and propertyless people. Envisioned a decentralized society dominated by small property owners engaged in agrarian activity.

Federalists were able to strengthen america's international position.

Under the confederation, farmers rose in revolt over western land issues. Some settlers wanted to separate from the union.

Ordinances 1784-1787 caused border conflicts with Native Americans. Native Americans left out of constitution. They were not considered citizens and therefore received no direct representation.

1791- Britain sends minister to U.S because Madison and Republicans threatened to put restriction on British trade.

1793 french government goes to war with Britain, But America remains neutral.

1794- Britain Royal Navy seizes american ships engaged in trade with French west indies.
Anti-British feelings, but Hamilton realizes war would stop their imports with GB and lose revenue.
John Jay takes over for Hamilton.

Federalists chose to preserve stability instead of respecting individuals liberties. Federalist party downfall.
