Tragedy
a dramatic work of art characterized by a tragic hero whose downfall is a result of a tragic flaw or weakness
Tragic hero
a main character in a tragedy whose weakness causes their downfall and who recognizes the consequences of their actions
Tragic flaw
a weakness or trait that causes the downfall of a major character
Epic hero
a larger-than-life character who, through his journey, embodies the values of a culture
Homeric Simile
When an epic event is compared to an everyday, ordinary event in an extended way
Prologue
The introduction to a piece of literature
Hubris
Greek word for "pride," often a tragic flaw
Pun
a play on words
Personification
giving non-human things human characteristics
Allusion
a reference to something outside of the story (historical, mythological, biblical, or literary)
Metaphor
a comparison of two things in which one thing is described as actually being the other thing
Simile
a comparison of two things in which one thing is described as being like the other thing
Foil
two characters with opposite, contrasting personalities
Dramatic irony
when the audience knows something that the characters in the story do not
Monologue
a long speech by a single character to others on stage
Soliloquy
a long speech by a single character expressing their thoughts, usually alone on stage
Aside
a brief remark, usually to the audience, not meant to be overheard by the other characters
Iambic pentameter
a poetic pattern of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable

a long narrative poem about the journeys of a hero that embodies the values of a culture

a literary work which ends happily because the hero or heroine is able to overcome obstacles and get what he or she wants.
