Value of the Expression
the number named by the numerical expression. The simplest or most common name
Simplifying the Expression
replacing a numerical expression by the simplest name for its value
Substitution Principle
an expression maybe replaced by another expression that has the same value
Evaluating the Expression
replacing the variable in a variable expression by a given value and simplifying the result
Grouping Symbol
parentheses or brackets used to enclose an expression that should be simplified first. Multiplication symbols are left out of expressions with grouping symbols
More than one Grouping Symbol
simplify the innermost grouping symbol first. Then work toward the outermost grouping symbol until the simplest expression is found
Order of Operations
Parentheses, exponents, Multiplication, Division, addition, subtraction
Equation
formed by placing an equal sign between two numerical expressions, called sides of the equation
Open Sentence
an equation that contains one or more variables
Domain
the given set of numbers that a variable may represent
Solution
any value of the variable that turns an open sentence into a true statement, and satisfies the sentence
Solution Set
the set of all solutions of an open sentence
Solving the Equation
finding the solution set
