Absolute dating vs relative dating
Terms in this set (9)
What is the difference between absolute dating and relative dating?
Absolute dating is used to find the exact age of a rock/ fossil and relative dating is used to find the one age of a rock layer in comparison to others
How does half-life apply to absolute dating?
Scientists use the ratio of radioactive atoms to decayed atoms to find the age of a rock/ fossil sample
How can you apply half-life to real examples of material?
By looking at what the sample started off with and you know that if it is half then it went through 1 half life. If it went through 2 it would be half that half life etc.
How can you apply knowledge to a question asking about the number of years of a half life?
For example: If the material is 5,000 years old and it had 12% left, you would multiply the numbers and see how many half life's it went through.
+ and - of relative dating
+=easily determine realative age, only option before radiometic dating
-=does not provide age in years, disturbed rock layers can cause inaccurate results
Def of superposition
New rock layers always form on top of old rock layers, ex: your laundry pile.
Why is it meaningful if rock layers get disturbed?
The result can be inaccurate and it is caused by volc, asteroids, waterways etc
What is an index fossil and what is the process of using it?
def: a fossil that can be used to also determine the age of a rock layer, rock layers can look different and be in a different location but can contain the same species.
What scientific theory grew out of relative dating?
Evolution created by Charles Darwin
