Actinic Keratosis
Precancerous,Prevent with sun protection, *felt easier than seen, feels like sandpaper*** Light skin and abundant sun exposure may result in AKs;An AK is rough, scaling, and ill marginated; it is often easier felt than seen;Indurated AKs should be biopsied to rule out cancer;AKs have the potential of developing into a SQUAMOUS cell carcinoma

Therapy: Sunscreen, Imiquimod 5% cream

Nodular Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
Malignancy of the epidermal basal cell;Rarely metastasizes (but can be locally destructive)
Different types have different appearances
1.Nodular
2.Pigmented
3.Superficial
4.Scaring
___is the most common skin cancer, and it rarely metastasizes; A "pearly" appearance is the most characteristic feature;Pigmented - black slightly scaling, translucent plaque;Nonhealing scars should be biopsied;

Therapy:Excision,Curettage and electrodessication,Mohs micrographic surgery,Radiation,Cryotherapy,Topical 5-FU or imiquimod (Aldara)

Corn
Caused by pressure or friction;Don't interrupt skin lines
They have a clear center and intact skin lines
**PERSIST UNLESS FRICTION AND PRESSURE ARE RELIEVED***
Therapy:
Paring down with a scalpel
Soften with salicylic acid plaster
Reduction of trauma
Surgical correction of deformity

Keratoacanthoma (KA)
Neoplasm of the epithelium that is biologically benign, but histologically resembles an SCC;Grows rapidly! Is a nodule with a central keratin filled crater; Most involute within 6 months
Molluscum Contagiosum
Caused by a poxvirus;Umbilicated smooth papule;Destructive treatment.

Therapy:
1.Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen
2.Salicylic acid
3.Cantharidin
4.curettage

Nevus Sebaceous (of Jadasson)
Hamartoma of sebaceous glands & other cutaneous structures;Appears at birth;Becomes warty;Tumors can develop; **Excision recommended, definitely not till after puberty. Often on hair line; grow; don't treat til after puberty cuz regrow bigger and badder***
Wart
Caused by multiple papillomavirus types;Vary in appearance
Treatments are nonspecific and destructive.
scaling verrucous papules with interrupted skin lines and black puncta.Thickened epidermis with overlying hyperkeratosis. Vacuolated keratinocytes are present in the granular cell layer.
Seborrheic Keratosis
Common in adults;Tan, brown, dark brown, well demarcated, "stuck on" appearance; When in doubt, biopsy to rule out melanoma.

Therapy:Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen,Curettage,Shave biopsy or excision
*People tend to get more of them*
Skin Tag
Soft pedunculated papules; No therapy necessary;Large or necrotic ones should be sent to pathology.

Therapy:
Snipping off with scissors
Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
Key Points:Malignancy of keratinocytes,Potential to metastasize
This is the second most common skin cancer;Mostly occusr on the head, neck, and arms;Chronic ulcers should be biopsied to exclude malignancy; When this arising into an AK has, a low metastatic potential

Therapy:Excision,Curettage and electrodesiccation,Mohs' micrographic surgery,Radiation,(Cryo)

Trichoepithelioma
Benign tumor of the hair follicle **Usually on face,Single or multiple firm flesh colored papule**
Multiple trichoeps - may be inherited as an autosomal dominant condition. (Brook-Spiegler)
