What is the meaning behind Chon Ji?
Chon Ji means literally "the heaven, the earth". It is in the orient interpreted as the creation of the world or the beginning of human history. It is therefore the initial pattern played by the beginner. It consists of two similar parts: one to represent the heaven and the other the earth. It consists of 19 moves.
What is the meaning behind Dan Gun?
Dan Gun is named after the holy Dan Gun, the legendary founder of Korea in 2333 B.C. The patern consists of 21 moves.
What is the meaning behind Do San?
Do San is the pseudonym of the patriot Anh Chang Ho (1876-1938) who devoted his entire life to the furthering of education in Korea and of its independent movement. The pattern consists of 24 moves.
What is the meaning behind Won Hyo?
Won Hyo is the noted monk who introduced buddhism to the Silla dynasty in 686 A.D. The pattern consists of 28 moves.
What is the meaning behind Yul Gok?
Yul Gok is the pseudopnym of the great philosopher and scholar Yi I (1536-1584) knicknamed 'the Confucius of Korea'. The 38 moves represent his birth on the 38th degree latitude.
What is the meaning behind Toi Gye?
Toi Gye is the penname of the 16th century scholar Yi Hwang who was regarded as an authority on neo-confucionism. The 37 moves represent his birthplace on the 37th degree latitude and the diagram represents the calligraphy for scholar.
What is the meaning behind Joon Gun?
Joon Gun is named after Anh Joon Gun who assassinated Hiro Bumi Ito the first Japanese Governor General of Korea, known as the man behind the Japan-Korea merger. The 32 moves represent Mr Anh's age when he was executed in Lui Shung prison in 1910.
What is the meaning behind Hwa Rang?
Hwa Rang is the name given to an army of young warriors in teh Silla dynasty in Korea. They were first mentioned in 600 A.D. and over the years they gradually became a significant force in the unification of Korea's three kingdoms. 'Hwa Rang' means flowering youth group that originated in the Silla Dynasty in 600 A.D. The 29 moves represent the 29th infantry division where taekwondo developed into maturity.
What is the meaning behind Choong Moo?
Choong Moo was the name given to the Yi Dynasty adminral Yi Sun Sin who, in 1592, is reputed to have invented the world's first armoured battleship (kobukson) thought to be the precursor to the modern day submarine. This pattern ends in a left handed attack to represent his regrettable death having no chance to show his unrestrained potentiality checked by the forced reservation of his loyalty to the king. The pattern consists of 30 moves.
