steam heating systems
consist of a boiler, firings, accessories, steam supply system, heat exchangers, terminal devices, controls, and the condensate return system
hydronic heating systems
consist of a boiler, fittings, accessories, hot water supply system, circulating pump, terminal devices, controls, and hot water return system
steel, cast iron, fire tube, watertube, electric boiler
types of boilers
safety valve
is the amount of steam in pounds per hour (1b/hr) that is capable of venting at rated pressure
safety relief valve
is a valve on a hot water boiler that prevents excessive pressure from building up during a malfunction and is rated in Btu relieved per hour (Btu/hr)
check, gate, globe, os & y valve
feed water valve types
feed water system
must supply sufficient water at the proper temperature and pressure to maintain a normal operating water level (NOWL)
check valve
allow boiler water to flow in only one direction
gate valve
are used to completely stop boiler water flow
globe valve
regulate boiler water flow but are sometimes used to stop boiler water flow
os & y valve
is used as the main steam stop valve for a boiler and does not restrict the flow of steam when opened
natural, forced, induced, balanced draft
draft system types
draft system
regulates the flow of air into and out of the burner and discharges the gases of combustion from the firebox into the atmosphere
natural draft
is draft produced by natural actions resulting from temperature and density differences between atmospheric air and the gases of combustion
forced draft
is mechanical draft that pushes air through the firebox by blowers located on the front of the boiler, allowing the fire to burn hotter because more air is available for combustion
induced draft
produces a vacuum in the firebox and breeching to create airflow through the firebox
balanced draft
allows for more precise control of combustion for maximum efficiency in large boilers
baseboard convector
a convection heater that is enclosed in a low cabinet
cabinet convector
a convection heater that is enclosed
forced convector
a convection heater that uses a blower or fan to move air
refrigeration
the process of moving heat from an area where it is undesirable to an area where the heat is not objectionable and is derived from methane (CH4) and ethane (C2H6)
air conditioning
the process of cooling the air in a building to provide a comfortable temperature. The goal is to keep it more comfortable inside the house than it is outside.
window, split, centralized, packaged air conditioning systems
types of air conditioning systems
window air conditioning system
units are reliable and simple to instal to keep a room cool while it can be easily removed for storage (up to 5 tons of capacity)
split air conditioning system
compromises of two parts: the outdoor unit and indoor unit. The outdoor unit, fitted outside the room, house components like the compressor, condenser, and expansion valve. The indoor unit compromises the evaporator or cooling oil and the cooling fan (up to 5 tons of capacity)
centralized air conditioning system
plants or systems are used when large buildings, hotel, theaters, airports, shopping malls etc. are to be air conditioned completely (beyond 20 tons of capacity)
packaged air conditioning system
are used for the cooling capacities in between the fixed rate capacities of 3, 5, 7, 10, and 15 tons.
district cooling system
a system which distribute chilled water or other media, usually provided from a dedicated cooling plant, to multiple buildings for air conditioning or other uses. It's advantages are improve energy efficiency, protect environment, save spaces, improve urban view, reduce manpower for operation and maintenance
chilled beam system
it is a type of convection HVAC system designed to heat or cooled high rise building such as commercial building and it's purpose is to chill the air around it as the air becomes denser and falls to the floor
steel boiler
usually welded together to form a single unit with a specific output rating
cast iron boiler
consist of hollow sections that are bolted together, and by adding or removing sections to the boiler a required output rating is achieved
fire tube boiler
holds the hot products of combustion, which heats the water that surrounds it
water tube boiler
hold water heated by the hot products of combustion, which surround it
electric boiler
is a boiler that uses heat produced by resistance heating elements to produce steam or heat water directly
