How does this resemble events that happened in the Book of Exodus?
This reminds us of the Crossing/Parting of the Red Sea. In both stories, God interfers to prove a point and performs a miracle. The Israelites cannot cross each of the rivers without God's permission
What is the role of the Ark of the Covenant and Levitical Priests?
Ark of the Covenant : Leads Israelites into the Promised Land
Levitical Priests: Carry the Ark of the Covenant to Canaan
Why does it have to happen this way?
Priests carrying the Ark into battle is the proper way of doing things: YHWH leads the Israelites to and through Canaan

She hides the two spies that came to her house
Why does she do it?
She said that she did not know where they came from or who they are, but she knows the LORD has given them the land, and the fear of 2 men has fallen on others.
She wants them to save the lives of her family and deliver their lives from death.
How does the conquest of Jericho take place?
THE PRIEST MARCH AROUND THE CITY WITH THE ARK BLOWING HORNS AND THEN THE WALLS COLAPSE
What is left of the city?
RAHAB AND ALL WHO WERE IN HER HOUSE
What is the Ban? (i.e. what are the requirements)
(HEREM) KILL EVERYONE, TAKE NO LOOT FOR YOURSELF, DESTROY ALL PROPERTY, GIVE IT TO PRIEST WHO WILL SACRIFICE IT
The Ban says the Israelites must:
1. Kill all of the people of the city
2. Not take any of the loot from the battle for themselves
3. Destroy all the property of the city, or
4. Give it to the priests
When is the Ban enacted?
AFTER THE HEBREWS CONQUERED A CITY OR AREA
What is the purpose of the Ban?
SO THEY WONT MINGLE WITH THE CANAANITES AND BE TEMPTED WITH THE SPOILS OF WAR AND IDOLATRY
What are the consequences for the Israelites when they don't follow YHWH's commandment to enact the ban?
THE HEBREWS LOOSE GODS HELP AND START TO LOOSE BATTLES

THEY KILLED ACHAN AND REPENTED TO GOD THEN HE HELP THEM AMBUSH AI BUY HAVING ONE SIDE OF THE ARMY PULL OUT THE SOLDIERS WHILE THE OTHER SIDE OR THE ARMY RUSHED THE CITY

How is Achan's involvement resolved by the Israelites?
THEY STONE HIM TWICE THEN ASKED GOD FOR FORGIVENESS
Why do the 5 Amorite Kings wage war against the Gibeonites?
They heard the Gibeonites made peace with the sons of Israel
How does Joshua intervene on their behalf?
Joshua took his men and went to save Gideon
Who is Ba'al?
The lord or owner of the land

Why did the Canaanites practice nature religion?
It provided a way to control nature's powers and insure the ruitfulness of the soul

Some farmers may have relied on Ba'al for their crops to grow
They may mainly worship YHWH but take part in certain Ba'al rituals
What is an example of syncretism?

What does Joshua warn the Israelites about in his farewell address?
-Tells them to be very steadfast
-Keep and do all that Moses did
-Do not make mention of their gods' names
-Do not marry them
-Do all the LORD tells you
-Follow the law
What promises does he give them and future generations?
He promises the Land that the LORD promised to them and past generations
Keep the land they have conquered
Must stay faithful to God in order to have his help
How does Joshua explain the Israelite successes up to this point?
Not one thing has failed of all the good things the LORD has promised
