Terms in this set (21)
A change which alters the appearance, but does not create a new substance
change that produces matter with a different composition than the original matter
Smallest unit of an element that still maintains its properties; building blocks of matter
pure substance that consists entirely of one type of atom
two or more elements that are chemically combined
A small group of atoms held together by covalent bonds.
Two or more substances which are physically combined and can be separated by physical means.
A charge of +1, a mass = 1 a.m.u. and is located in the nucleus
A charge of 0, a mass = 1 a.m.u. and is located in the nucleus
A charge of -1, a mass = 1/1840 a.m.u. and is located in the electron cloud.
Relative atomic mass
the mass of an atom usually expressed in atomic mass units
Atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
Elements that are characteristically electropositive, malleable, ductile and shiney
Elements that are characteristically Poor conductors, Brittle, Weak and dull
Characteristics of transition metals: Metals, Good Conductors, High melting points,Form coloured compounds,Malleable, High densities, Hard and Tough
Characteristics of Alkali Metals:Low melting and boiling points compared to other metals, Soft, Low densities, React with water to form hydrogen/ Hydroxides,
Characteristics of Non-Metals: Non metals, Unreactive, Colorless, exist in single atoms
Characteristics of noble gases: Non Metals, low boiling and melting points, Poor conductors of electricity and heat, have coloured vapors, Diatomic
Alkali Metal Trends
As you go down the group the atomic number increases and these trends occur: melting points decrease, Densities increase, they become softer and more reactive
As you go down the group the atomic number increases and these trends occur:Melting and boiling points increase, Top two are gas at RTP bottom two are solid at RTP and middle one is liquid, Halogens become darker as you go down the group(NOT INCLUDING Uus)
Noble Gases Trends
As you go down the group: Boiling point increases and Density increases
