Significant Figures
Each of the digits of a number that are used to express it to the required degree of accuracy, starting from the first nonzero digit
Energy
Energy is the movement/displacement of matter
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
Kinetic Energy
Energy of motion. All moving things have kinetic energy
Potential Energy
Energy that is stored in an object
Mechanical Energy
The sum of kinetic and potential energy that is used to do work
Chemical Energy
Energy that is stored in the bonds of chemical compounds
Light Energy
Type of kinetic energy with the ability to form types of light people can see as well as invisible waves
Thermal Energy
Energy that comes from heat
Sound Energy
Is the movement of energy through substances in longitudinal (compression/rarefaction) waves
Electrical Energy
Energy that is caused by moving electric charges
Nuclear Energy
Created from the splitting of uranium atoms in a process called fission. Fission releases energy that can be used to make steam, and the steam is used to power a turbine to generate electricity
Kinetic Energy Equation
½
m
*v2
m = mass
V = speed
Gravitational Potential Energy Equation
m
g
h
m = mass
g = gravitational Acceleration or 10 newtons
h = height
Elastic Potential Energy Equation
Ave. F*d
Ave. F = Average force
d = distance pulled back
Work
When a force acts upon an object to cause a displacement (or a motion)
Work Equation
F*D
F = force
D = displacement
If displacement is directly up, the force is the weight of the object in Newtons
1 kg = 10 Newtons
Power
The rate at which work is done on an object
Power Equation
W/t
W = work
t = time in seconds
Unit for GPE, KE, EPE, Work
joules
Power Unit
joules/s
Mass Unit
KG
Velocity
m/s
