Displacement

distance and direction of an object's change in position from the starting point.

Distance

How far an object moves

Speed

distance an object travels per unit of time which can be calculated by v = d/t where v = speed, d = distance, and t = time.

Average Speed

total distance that an object travels divided by the total time it takes to travel that distance.

Instantaneous Speed

speed of an object at a given point in time which is constant for an object moving at constant speed and is different at each point in time for an object that is slowing down or speeding up.

Velocity

describes the speed and direction of a moving object.

Acceleration

rate of change of velocity which occurs if an object speeds up, changes direction, or slows down.

Kinematics

the branch concerned with the motions of objects without being concerned with the forces that cause the motion.

Mechanics

the study of the motion of objects

Deceleration

negative acceleration; slowing down
